Governor Signs New Cobo Deal
Jul 2, 2009
Metro Desk

Governor Granholm has signed legislation that allows Detroit to lease Cobo Hall to a regional authority which will upgrade the aging convention center.

The improvements will be paid for by a continuation of the state’s hotel and liquor taxes. The deal now goes to the Detroit City Council for its consideration. Earlier this week, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing asked the city council not to vote on the deal. Instead, he said the council should let the legislation take effect August first without response.

The new Cobo deal is an effort to keep the North American International Auto Show from leaving the city of Detroit.
