In May…The Detroit City Council formally asked Governor Granholm to remove Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick for official misconduct employing a seldom-used state law. Council says it was misled by the Mayor and other city officials during the settlement phase of a controversial whistleblower’s lawsuit that eventually cost the city more than eight million dollars. After reviewing legal documents filed by both sides…the Governor says hearings on Council’s request will move forward September 3rd. Spokesperson Liz Boyd.
“The Governor is as everyone knows a Harvard educated lawyer…she’s the former Attorney General…a former federal prosecutor. She has a great regard for the law and again this matter is not something we contemplated but is something the Governor has had to deal with.”
Lawyers for the Mayor repeatedly asked Granholm to delay the hearing until Kilpatrick’s two criminal cases are resolved. Boyd says the Governor is dealing only with the question before her. I’m Noah Ovshinsky, WDET News.
