According to the Insurance Information Institute…Detroiters pay the highest car insurance rates in the nation…averaging over five thousand dollars a year. That’s about 13-hundred dollars higher than the second-most expensive city…Philadelphia. Hendrix says even accounting for increased risk factors such as theft…Detroit’s rates are still unreasonably high. He says that as Mayor…he’d make filing a class-action lawsuit against insurers part of a “comprehensive strategy” to reduce rates. Hendrix says political leaders have let the issue go for too long:
“For time immemoriam the mayor of the city of Detroit and political leaders all across the state have punted when it comes to this issue…and I’m simply saying to the residents of the city of Detroit I’m prepared to try to take this fight to a different level…and if that means bringing a class-action lawsuit I’m prepared to do that.”
Hendrix wouldn’t comment further on the legal basis of such a suit…saying he didn’t see the need to provide details at this time. This is Sarah Cwiek…WDET news.
