Lions Sign New QB

November 3, 2008               by Pat Batcheller

Lions head coach Rod Marinelli says he’s not sure yet who his starting quarterback will be next Sunday against Jacksonville. The team has signed veteran Daunte Culpepper to a two-year contract…and he could replace Dan Orlovsky as soon as he’s ready to play. Marinelli says Culpepper has more experience than Orlovsky and backup Drew Stanton.

“I’ve competed against him for a lot of years…and had a chance to watch him throw the ball here. He has great command of the game, he’s played a lot of football, and he has a lot of skill.”

The 31-year-old Culpepper is a three-time Pro-Bowler…but knee injuries have slowed him down in recent years…and he announced his retirement in September. He could play sooner than expected because Orlovsky sprained his thumb in Sunday’s loss to the Bears…and is wearing a removable cast.
