Tigers closer Todd Jones says this season was his last.  He’s retiring when the season ends this weekend.  WDET’s Pat Batcheller reports.

Todd Jones has never been shy about showing his emotions…and it was no different when he choked up during his retirement news conference on Thursday.

“When I take that uniform off after the pre-game on Saturday, that’ll be the last time I’ll ever wear it… (long pause)…and it’s okay”

Jones spent 16 years in the Major Leagues...eight of those with the Tigers.  He saved 319 games in his career…235 of those with Detroit.  His last save came on July 17th…more than two months ago.  He eventually lost his job as the closer due to control problems aggravated by a shoulder injury.  He hasn’t pitched since August 15th and he won’t pitch this weekend.  Jones says he decided before the season began that this would be his final year…but he’s disappointed with the way it’s ending…for himself and his struggling team.

“I regret the fact that I’m not able to go out there and take my medicine from the fans and the media, because it’s important to finish what you start.”

Jones says he’s grateful to finish his career as a Tiger.  He says he was proud to represent the team in the 2000 All-Star Game… the 2006 World Series…and the final game at Tiger Stadium…where he threw the last pitch.
