Small SUV's Receive Top Crash Scores
Aug 20, 2008
Automotive & Business
Four small sport utility vehicles have received top scores in insurance industry crash tests.  Detroit Public Radio’s Jerome Vaughn has more.
SOQ

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says the Ford Escape, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Rogue and Volkswagen Tiguan received the highest possible scores in front, side and rear crash tests.

All of the SUV's tested were from the 2009 model year.

Institute officials say two bits of equipment were largely responsible for the high scores.  The vehicles tested were equipped with side airbags and electronic stability control.

By comparison – the 2008 Jeep Wrangler was tested without optional side airbags…and received the lowest rating of “poor” in side crash tests.

The Insurance Institute has lobbied automakers to make side airbags standard equipment on new vehicles.  The federal government will require all new cars and trucks to have electronic stability control starting in the 2012 model year.
