Synagro Investigation Looks at Mayor's Family
Jul 3, 2008
General

Mayor Kilpatrick’s defenders are emphatic – he has nothing to do with a federal investigation involving a sludge contracts approved by the Detroit City Council.

Federal authorities are investigating a nearly $50 million contract between the city and Synagro. The chief of staff of the Detroit City Council President resigned…after videos surfaced that appear to show the staff member accepting money from representatives of those trying to have that contract approved. One Detroit local union leader alleges that Mayor Kilpatrick pushed for the contract. But Kilpatrick strongly denies the charge. The Mayor told journalists this week that he’ll consider legal action against any broadcasters tying him to the federal investigation of Synagro.

On Wednesday, Kilpatrick’s criminal defense attorney Jim Parkman said the Mayor would cooperate with Federal investigators, if asked.

“I want to clear this up once and for all. This is it. No more questions ever from me about this. Here’s the deal. The Mayor may know some of these people. He knows a lot of people… but he has not in any way in any form or fashion been involved in any illegality, in any investigation or FBI probe or bribe, whatsoever.”

The Detroit News reports that someone extremely close to the Mayor is being looked at in the FBI’s Synagro probe… he’s the Mayor’s father, Bernard Kilpatrick.
