Tigers General Manager Dave Dombrowski says there will be changes in the off-season…after a disappointing 2008. Detroit started the year as a World Series contender…but finished in last place in the American League Central division. Dombrowski says he’ll look for better pitching…as well as a new shortstop and a new catcher. But he adds that it’s too early to say which new players will wear the Olde English “D” in 2009.
“I don’t know who’s going to be available at this point with various clubs. I have not had one conversation with a club as far as a trade is concerned so far. We really needed to get through a lot of things we were doing. That process will start, and we’ll try to fit all the pieces together and make us better.”
The Tigers also need a new closer…but Dombrowski says he does not expect to go after Francisco Rodriguez. The Los Angeles Angels’ stopper saved a record 62 games this year. He’ll be a free agent this winter…but the Tigers already have one of the highest payrolls in Major League Baseball.
