Up until this week…commission officials said they wanted a zoo funding millage to go before voters in November…to take advantage of high voter turnout. A meeting on the issue wasn’t planned until next month…which eliminated the possibility of putting the measure on the August ballot. But after fielding inquires from WDET and other media outlets…chairwoman Jewel Ware has scheduled a special meeting for this Thursday. If the votes are there…a proposal could go before voters in a little more than two months.
Both the Oakland and Macomb County Commissions have already acted to create authorities that would promote the millage increase.
The zoo’s financial situation has been precarious since the city of Detroit gave up control of the facility. The new millage would cost an average homeowner around 10 dollars a year. I’m Noah Ovshinsky, WDET news.
