DRIS Celebrates 30 Years of Audio Information Excellence!
August 2008 officially marked 30 years of service for DRIS, southeastern Michigan's only Radio Reading Service.
The celebration began Friday, February 29th at DRIS' Annual Recognition Reception!
This year's highlight was keynote speaker Ava Johnson, a 20+ year DRIS listener, and her Visually Impaired Gospel Choir! What is it like to lose your sight, hearing, health, ease of mobility and even your voice? Johnson eloquently described her personal journey through an array of challenges, her discovery and use of DRIS and her varied community activities.
A standing ovation by nearly 80 of DRIS' friends punctuated her powerful message to persevere, to never give up hope and to follow your life calling, no matter the obstacles. Several numbers from the choir got folks to their feet with hands clapping!
What a great way to celebrate DRIS achievements and goals!
Singled out for special recognition were Lions Districts 11 A-1 and 11 A-2 for their longtime partnership and support.
Volunteer Adam Alpert, 10, was also recognized for his on-air reading and his willingness to be profiled in Metro Parent Magazine. Alpert and his father, Robert, read City Magazines (Metro Times, Real, Detroit, etc.) for DRIS on alternating Saturday's.
Special thanks go to the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, New Center Gourmet, plus a cadre of Lions, Kiwanians and volunteers who assisted with set-up, decorations, registration and more. Thanks also to Ava Johnson, her choir and our pianists Paul Sutton and Adam Alpert.
