Volunteer Opportunities

Regular Reader
A volunteer who commits to an ongoing reading schedule (typically weekly or biweekly) for lengths varying from 30 minutes to 2.5 hours. Most material is read live in the DRIS on-air studio. Regular Readers must pass a rigorous audition and must be committed to excellent presentations and attendance. Regular Readers must schedule their own substitute in the event of an absence from DRIS' Substitute Reader List.

Permanent or On-Call Substitute Reader
A volunteer who serves as backup to a regular reader for a designated shift(s). The qualifications are much like a Regular Reader, except volunteers are not necessarily called upon weekly or biweekly. On-Call Subs work as needed; each shift has several. Permanent Subs have made a commitment to be the number one backup to a specific program and have agreed to always make themselves available to fill in when called.

Studio Engineer
A volunteer who is assigned to run control boards and/or automation system, generally outside "normal" business hours, such as weekday evenings, early mornings or weekends. Volunteers may be asked to fill-in for staff during vacation or illness. Experience preferred; some training is available.

Personal Reader
A volunteer who reads material to an individual with a print-impairment 1:1. DRIS helps match up interested parties based on geographic proximity and availability. Beyond this, the volunteer initiates contact with person in need to set up actual schedule. Reading material may be pretty much anything both parties agreed to include: personal mail, business material, canned goods, etc. Periodic progress reports are requested from recipient and volunteer.

Special Events/Outreach/Advocacy
A volunteer who helps staff, plan and implement special events, fund-raising projects and promotional tasks including staffing information tables at community events, working with listeners and groups, letter-writing, speaking engagements or audience research.

Office/Clerical
A volunteer who assists staff with general office needs and/or may help with specific projects like newsletter mailings, mail merges, letters, etc. Word processing and data base experience helpful. Schedule and time commitment vary.

Trouble Shooter/Courier
Helps troubleshoot technical problems for listeners. Technical experience helpful, not required.

If you have other skills you would like to contribute, please mention them on your application. Thanks!
