The audio sounds choppy, or cuts out and rebuffers frequently.

Buffering occurs when your computer is not receiving data fast enough; the buffering, or cutting out, occurs when the player tries to catch up. It may be caused by Internet congestion or insufficient bandwidth.

Closing some other windows and applications may help.

You can try adjusting your buffering setting. To adjust the buffering for Windows/PC:

For RealOne:
  • Open up the default RealOne Player program. The "default" program is usually found as an "icon" on the desktop of your computer, or through the "START" menu on your taskbar.
  • Go to the Tools menu and select Preferences.
  • Click the "Connection" tab to adjust settings for the best performance according to your connection speed.
  • For example, if you have a 56.6K modem but your connection is routinely only 30Kbps, you should probably set this to 28.8Kbps. If this setting is too high you will experience poor playback and extended buffering times as the RealOne Player attempts to play clips at bit-rates greater than your connection can deliver. Your Maximum Setting defines the upper limit for streams that RealOne Player should upshift into using SureStream. This should be set just below your best possible connection speed.
Deleting temporary files, clearing the memory cache, or increasing the memory size may help. You might also try to restart or reboot your computer to free up more of the system memory.

Sound card conflict: Not all sound cards are compatible with all streaming media players. Poorly implemented or incorrect sound card drivers may cause problems with compressed audio.

I can't connect/content won't play.

Make sure you have the highest versions of Quicktime or RealOne (v. 6.4 or higher) Players installed on your machine.

If all streams are in use, you will have difficulty connecting. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please keep trying, or try again later.

The stream may be temporarily off line. Please try again later.

You could be behind a firewall that has not had the appropriate ports opened for streaming. If you're trying to connect from work, talk to your system administrator about opening the appropriate ports on the firewall to allow streaming.

If your memory or cache file folders are full, you may experience audio streaming errors. Try emptying your Temporary Internet cache folder, and any additional temporary files, such as the contents of the recycling bin. You might also try to restart or reboot your computer to free up more of the system memory.

RealOne Player is free - look carefully!

If you link directly to the download area of Real's site on our Listen Live! page, you can connect directly to the download area for Real's free player. Look in the upper right area of the page above "Free Download". If you link to Real's main web page, you will see a prominent advertisement for the RealPlayer Plus software (about $30). However, there is always a link to the free download area in that page. Look Carefully for the "Free Real Player" link.

Can I listen with a Mac?

Yes, you sure can. System Requirements for Macintosh:

RealPlayerG2 or above needs to be installed on the system.
Internet Explore 5.0 is required on the system.
Netscape versions 4.08~4.7* are supported.
28/33K network connection speed is required, 56K modem or faster is recommended.

Quick Tips...

For best results, be sure you have the latest versions of the audio player of your choice. Each of the above options make the latest versions available at no cost.

Note: If you are having difficulty with the Listen Live! portion of the site, please try the following few fixes:

Microsoft Internet Explorer announced in August 2001 that it would no longer support some plug-ins beginning with version 5.5 Service Pack 2. (You can see the notice at http://developer.apple.com/quicktime/compatibility.php.) Our site has the imbedded HTML code that offers the "ActiveX" patch that will restore compatibility. Please visit the site and utilize the patch.

Also, if you have Windows Media Player lower than version 7 you can listen by pluging in the link directly:

1. Launch your Windows Media Player (click on Windows Media Player icon).
2. Click on FILE, then click on OPEN.
3. Type in the following URL exactly: http://www.wdetfm.org/listenlive/listen.asx
4. Click on OK.
The WDET stream should come up and play shortly thereafter.

At this point, you can choose WDET as one of your "Favorites" in the Edit menu.

If you need additional help or have comments, please let us know. And thanks again for supporting Public Radio in Detroit!

Pledging Online: Potential Problems and Solutions
ERROR MESSAGE: If you experience "times out" errors while trying to make a donation:

Symptoms
High traffic volume on our website can cause slowdowns in authentication of credit cards and processing of your contribution. Outside vendors handle this process for WDET and when the processing console gets a large number of transactions in the queue, it can cause your screen to "time out" without a clear indication of whether your gift has been processed.

Resolution

If this happens, DO NOT HIT "SUBMIT" AGAIN OR START OVER TO MAKE ANOTHER GIFT! This could result in a duplicate transaction that you did not intend. It would be best to check your credit card statement to see if your original charge did go through. If it did not, then feel free to return to wdetfm.org and make your gift at a less busy time.
If you are an Internet Explorer user and have encountered difficulties getting to our donation page or if you've received an "Secure Channel Error" message, the following solutions may help:

ERROR MESSAGE: An Error Occurred in the Secure Channel Support

Symptoms

When you try to connect to our secure Web site, you may receive the following error message:

Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site https://secure.wdet.org/?P=SPR2004C
An error occurred in the secure channel support.

Cause
This error message can occur if the server uses a certificate with a nonstandard length. The nonstandard length results in a nonstandard public key length, which Internet Explorer does not support. Internet Explorer supports only public keys with standard lengths (such as 512 bits, 1024 bits, 2048 bits, and so on).

Resolution
As a possible workaround, re-register the Rsabase.dll file by
clicking Start,
clicking Run,
typing regsvr32 rsabase.dll in the Open box,
and then clicking OK.

ERROR MESSAGE: An Error Occurred in the Secured Channel Support

Symptoms
When you attempt to access a server from Internet Explorer using a Verisign Client certificate, you may receive the following error message:

An error occurred in the secured channel support

When you click Close, the connection is terminated.

Resolution
This problem is fixed in Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1. Go to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com and look for the service update for Explorer 4.01.

ERROR MESSAGE: "Secured Channel Support" Error Message in Internet Explorer

Symptoms
When you are using the 128-bit version of Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1, you may receive the following error message:
"Internet Explorer can not open the Internet site http://www.wdetfm.org/fundraiser/index.php
An error occurred in secured channel support.

Cause
This behavior can occur if you attempt to visit a web site with a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate. When you are using the 128-bit Schannel.dll file, an error occurs during the secured channel handshake. Internet Explorer attempts to open the connection to the server and the server responds with an error, causing Internet Explorer to produce the error message.

Resolution
To resolve this problem, disable PCT 1.0.
To do so, follow these steps:
On the View menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab.
Under Security, click to clear the PCT 1.0 check box.
Click OK.
Quit all instances of Internet Explorer.

MORE INFORMATION:
Note that this error message can also occur if you disable the PCT 1.0, SSL 1.0, and SSL 2.0 security options.

To resolve this issue:
On the View menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab.
Click Restore Defaults, and then click OK.
Quit all instances of Internet Explorer.

Cause

This error message can occur for the following reason:
The PCT (Private Communications Technology) 1.0, SSL (Secure Socket Layer) 2.0, or SSL 3.0 security check box is not selected.

Resolution

To correct this behavior, use the appropriate method:

Method 1
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet.
